NEW – Hideouts for Extra-Large Cavies
If you’re the proud parent of “chonky” guinea pigs perhaps you’ve noticed your piggies gets halfway in a house before realising their bum is staying firmly in the living room.
I know I’ve needed to make larger piggy houses for a while so here they are.
40cm Wide x 26cm Deep x 17cm High – with generous Doors 16cm Wide x 15cm High
(15 3/4” Wide x 10 ¼” Deep x 6 ¾” High) Doors (6 ¼” Wide x 6” High)
Size Matters (It’s Not Just Comfort)
Guinea pigs are prey animals, as we know, and their hideout is their safe haven. If a hideout is too small, it can cause:
- Stress: A piggie that can’t fully turn around feels trapped.
- Skin Issues: Constant friction against the walls of a tight house can lead to fur loss or irritation.
- Bullying: In a multi-pig cage, a “one-way” small house is a recipe for a standoff.
The “Two-Door” Rule
For larger guinea pigs, the entrance is just as important as the interior square footage.
Pro Tip: Always look for hideouts with two openings.
Large guinea pigs can sometimes be a bit bossy. If a dominant pig blocks the only door, the pig inside is cornered. Two doors allow for a “flow-through” design, ensuring your larger piggie can exit gracefully if a friend decides to barge in.
